Chennai Airport to Thousand Lights: Metro, Taxi or App Cab?

Lobby and lift at Hotel Royal Inn, a short trip from Thousand Lights Metro
Short answer

The Blue Line metro runs from Chennai Airport to Thousand Lights, ten stops away, and a travel guide puts the airport to Central trip at 35 to 40 minutes. Taxis and app cabs take roughly 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Hotel Royal Inn is about 4 minutes on foot from Thousand Lights Metro.

Where is the airport and how far is the city?

Chennai International Airport is in Tirusulam, about 21 km southwest of the city centre, according to Wikipedia. That is a long enough distance that your choice of transport matters, especially with luggage.

The airport has separate domestic and international terminals. Wikipedia and the airport's own pages describe the terminal numbering differently, because it has changed over time, so follow your airline's information and the signs instead of relying on a number from an old article.

Hotel Royal Inn is in Thousand Lights, off Model School Road. We do not give an airport distance for the hotel because we have not verified one. Use a maps app and allow generous time.

How does the metro work from the airport?

Chennai Airport is the southern terminus of the Blue Line. Going towards the city, the stations are Meenambakkam, Nanganallur Road, Alandur, Guindy, Little Mount, Saidapet, Nandanam, Teynampet, AG-DMS and then Thousand Lights. That is ten stops from the airport station.

Wikipedia says shuttle services link the metro station and the terminals, while the airport's own pages have described the metro link as still planned, so ask at the airport information desk and follow signs for the metro. Arrangements may have changed since those pages were written.

A Cvent travel guide estimates 35 to 40 minutes by metro from the airport to Central station, and Thousand Lights comes a few stops before Central, so the full trip to Thousand Lights should be shorter, but check the current timetable.

  • Blue Line towards Wimco Nagar or Central
  • Get off at Thousand Lights, after AG-DMS
  • Walk about 4 minutes to the hotel

When is the metro the better choice?

The metro is better in daytime traffic, when roads are slow, and when you carry one or two bags. It is steadier than a car in the rains, and cheaper. Chennai Metro operates from about 5 AM to 11 PM, with Blue Line trains averaging every 6 minutes at peak and every 12 off-peak, according to Wikipedia.

It is less suitable if you arrive after the last train, if you carry several heavy bags, or if you travel with an older relative who finds stairs and long platform walks tiring. In those cases, a cab to the door is kinder.

If you use the metro, buy your ticket at the station or through the Chennai One app, which launched in September 2025 for bus, metro and suburban tickets.

What about taxis and app cabs?

Taxi counters and app-based services operate at the airport. Travel time depends heavily on traffic and may be 30 to 60 minutes. Confirm the fare before you start, or use an app that shows the fare in advance.

Give the driver the full address: 14, Gulam Abbas Ali Khan 9th Street, off Model School Road, Thousand Lights, Chennai 600006. Save the hotel's phone number in case the driver needs help finding the lane.

After a long flight, the door-to-door convenience is worth paying for. Keep your luggage with you, and do not accept a hurried offer from touts.

What should you plan around check-in time?

Flights often land early in the morning or late at night. The hotel's check-in is at 1 PM and check-out at 11 AM, and the reception runs 24 hours, so you will always find someone at the desk, but a room may not be ready for an early arrival. Our post on arriving before check-in covers what to do.

If you land late, tell the hotel your flight number and expected time when you book, so the team is ready. Rates are per room, per night: Rs 1,800 for one guest in a Deluxe Double, Rs 2,000 for two, Rs 2,500 for the Triple Occupancy Room and Rs 2,800 for the 1BHK Room. Please reconfirm when booking.

On the way back, leave for the airport well before your flight. Allow extra time on weekdays at rush hour and in heavy rain.

When you plan the return journey, work backwards from your flight time. Add the check-out at 11 AM, a buffer for luggage, the journey itself and the time the airline asks you to be at the airport. Write the times down the night before, and set an alarm. A calm exit is as important as a calm arrival.

How do you keep the journey smooth with children or older relatives?

Break the journey into short steps. Collect bags, find the metro, ride, walk. For older relatives, a cab straight to the hotel may be better than a long walk through stations. If you go by metro, look for lifts and take your time on stairs and platform edges.

Carry water and a small snack, and avoid rushing. If the flight was long, keep the first evening quiet: a simple meal, a rest and an early night. The hotel's lift and 24-hour reception make late arrivals easier.

Tell the driver or the hotel if anyone needs extra help getting in or out of a vehicle. People are usually glad to assist when they know in advance.
