How to Read a Hotel Listing Honestly: Kitchen, Distance, Price

Read a hotel listing by checking which rooms have the kitchen, how distances are measured, whether the rate is per room or per person, and whether taxes and extras are shown. India's 2023 dark-pattern guidelines name drip pricing and false urgency as practices to watch for.
Why do listings confuse people?
Hotel listings pack many claims into a few lines. A phrase like 'kitchen room' can mean a full kitchen, a small counter or a shared pantry. 'Near the hospital' can mean a five minute walk or a half hour drive. A price can be per room or per person, with or without taxes.
Most hotels do not mean to mislead, but people read quickly and fill gaps with hope. A little care before you book saves you disappointment on arrival.
This guide uses Hotel Royal Inn as an example, because we know it well, and shows the questions to ask of any listing.
What does 'kitchen' or 'kitchenette' really mean?
Ask which rooms have it, and what exactly is inside. At Hotel Royal Inn, the 1BHK Room has an in-room kitchenette with a stove, sink and counter. Only the 1BHK Room has a kitchenette. That is the sort of precise statement to look for.
Then ask what is provided: cookware, a refrigerator, crockery, a cooking gas or electric arrangement, and who supplies cleaning materials. We advise you to ask the reception about these rather than assume.
If a listing says 'kitchen' for every room and cannot say what is in it, be cautious.
- Which rooms have it?
- What is provided, and what must you bring?
- Is there a refrigerator and a cooking vessel set?
How should you read distances and photographs?
Distances are most useful when they say how you travel and how long it takes. The hotel's figures are on foot: about 4 minutes to Thousand Lights Metro, about 5 minutes to AG-DMS Metro, 8 to 9 minutes to Apollo Hospital on Greams Road and 8 to 12 minutes to the US Consulate General. Walking times change with weather, crowds and your own pace, so treat them as a guide and test the route on a map.
Distances in kilometres without a travel mode are less useful. Check them on a maps app, at the time of day you will travel.
Photographs should show the actual room type. If photographs are labelled by room, as the 1BHK Room and the Deluxe Double are on the Royal Inn site, you can match them to the rate. Be careful when a listing uses one nice photo for every category.
How do you spot hidden charges and pressure tactics?
The 2023 Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns in India define drip pricing as not revealing the full price upfront and revealing cost elements at later stages, basket sneaking as adding extra items or costs at checkout without consent, and false urgency as creating a false sense of scarcity to push a purchase. A hotel example given in a legal summary is a site claiming only limited rooms remain when that is not true.
So look for the final total before you pay. Ask whether taxes, service charges or extra-person charges apply. Hotel Royal Inn's rates are per room, per night, and the Deluxe Double is Rs 1,800 for one guest and Rs 2,000 for two guests. The hotel asks guests to reconfirm taxes at booking.
Treat countdown timers, 'only one room left' banners and shaming messages with suspicion, and call the hotel directly if you feel pressured.
What should you ask before you pay?
Ask these questions in a short call or WhatsApp message. What is the total for my dates, with taxes? What are the check-in and check-out times? Is the rate per room or per person? What is the cancellation policy? Which room has the kitchenette? How far is the walk to the places I need?
Our check-in is at 1 PM and check-out at 11 AM, with reception and restaurant service open 24 hours. Rates run from Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,800 per room, per night. Save the replies. If anything differs on arrival, you have it in writing.
For the cancellation policy, please ask the hotel directly.
What do reviews and ratings tell you?
Reviews help, but read them with care. Look for patterns, not single stars. If several guests mention the same noise, lift or water problem, take it seriously. If one person is angry about a delay, it may be a one-off.
Check the date. A review from three years ago may not reflect the hotel today. Look at what guests did, not just how they felt, and pay attention to replies from the hotel.
A calm call to the hotel is still the best test. Honest answers, given without pressure, are a good sign.
Finally, compare at least two listings, and compare like for like: the same dates, the same number of guests and the same inclusions. A cheaper headline price often changes once the same items are counted.
