Best Time to Visit Chennai: A Month-by-Month Planning Calendar

The coolest, most comfortable stretch in Chennai runs from about mid-December to mid-February. April to June is the hottest, and the northeast monsoon brings the most rain from October to December. For hospital or house-hunting stays, weather matters less than your appointment, so pack for heat and rain.
What does the year look like in Chennai?
Tamil Nadu's government statistics describe four seasons: the southwest monsoon from June to September, the northeast monsoon from October to December, winter from January to February and a hot-weather season from March to May. Chennai gets most of its rain from the northeast monsoon.
Wikipedia says April to June is the hottest time, with average temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, and that cyclones and flooding in low-lying areas can occur during the northeast monsoon. A weather site describing long-term averages puts the cooler period at about November to mid-February, with November the wettest month.
These are general patterns. Individual years vary, so check a current forecast before you travel.
Which months are best for comfort?
Mid-December to mid-February is generally the most comfortable period, with lower temperatures and less rain. It is also a busy time, with the Chennai Music Season running from mid-November to January and Pongal in mid-January.
If you want comfortable weather and fewer crowds, late January and February can work well. For beach visits, a weather site recommends late December to mid-March.
Book early for December and January, since many families and visitors travel then. Please reconfirm hotel rates when you book, as demand can affect availability.
The monsoon also affects the plan for a trip tied to a date. If your exam, hospital visit or flight falls in November, leave a spare day on either side. A few lost hours in traffic are easier to absorb than a missed appointment.
What about the hot months?
From April to June, expect strong heat and humidity. Plan outdoor activity for early morning and evening, drink water often, wear light cotton clothes and rest during the middle of the day. Air conditioning in the room makes a real difference.
Hotel Royal Inn has air conditioning in every room, free Wi-Fi and a lift to all floors. If you are staying for medical or work reasons, the heat matters less than the schedule, so plan around it, not against it.
Puthandu, the Tamil New Year, falls on or about 14 April and is a public holiday in Tamil Nadu, which affects shops, offices and transport timings.
What should you expect in the monsoon?
From October to December, expect heavy rain on some days, especially in November. Roads can flood in low-lying areas and traffic slows. Carry an umbrella, wear shoes with grip and keep a flexible schedule.
Keep a few shelf-stable food items in the room so you are not forced out for every meal. The 1BHK Room has an in-room kitchenette with a stove, sink and counter. Our earlier weather post has more tips for the rains.
If you have a flight or train on a rainy day, leave earlier than usual, and keep your phone charged.
How should you plan a long stay around the seasons?
Decide what matters most. If it is cost and flexibility, ask the hotel about availability across a few different weeks. If it is comfort, choose mid-December to mid-February. If it is tied to a hospital date or a job start, you cannot move it, so pack for the season.
Check holidays that may affect shops, banks and transport. Public holidays in Tamil Nadu include Pongal in January, Puthandu in April and Deepavali in October or November. Banks also close on the second and fourth Saturdays.
Rates at Hotel Royal Inn are per room, per night: Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,800 depending on the room. Please reconfirm rates for your dates.
What should you pack, and how early should you book?
For the hot months, pack light cotton clothes, a cap or umbrella, sunscreen if you use it, sandals and a refillable water bottle. For the rains, add a compact umbrella, a light rain layer, quick-drying clothes and shoes with good grip. In every season, keep a thin layer for air-conditioned spaces such as hospitals, malls and the metro.
Keep documents in a plastic sleeve and carry a power bank. If you have appointments, bring printed copies as well as phone photographs.
If you are staying a month or more, pack for a mix of weather, because a forecast can change within weeks. Laundry will be part of your routine, so ask the reception about it before you rely on it.
Whatever the month, a flexible mind helps more than a perfect plan.
For ordinary months, booking a week or two ahead is usually enough, but for December, January and festival weeks, book as early as you can. If your trip is tied to a hospital date, book the stay when you book the appointment.
