Groceries, Pharmacy, ATM and Laundry Near Thousand Lights

Thousand Lights is in central Chennai, so groceries, pharmacies, ATMs and laundry shops are generally within a short ride, and large malls such as Express Avenue and Spencer Plaza are in the wider area. Ask the Royal Inn reception for the nearest shop of each type, and remember that banks close on the second and fourth Saturdays.
What is around Thousand Lights for everyday errands?
Thousand Lights is part of central Chennai. Teynampet, the next locality along Anna Salai, is described as one of the busiest commercial localities in the city, and the wider area has shops, offices and hospitals within a short ride.
We do not name individual shops in this post, because we have not verified current names, timings or prices, and they change. The best source for the nearest grocer, pharmacy or laundry is the Royal Inn reception, who know which shops open early, which stay open late and which are reliable.
A useful rule is to ask for one of each on the first day: a small grocery, a pharmacy that opens late, a laundry or dry-cleaner and an ATM. Save them on your phone map so you do not have to ask again.
Walk in the cooler hours if you can. A short walk in the early morning or after sunset is far more pleasant than the same walk at noon.
Ask for places within a short walk first, and only then for places that need a ride.
Where do you buy groceries for a kitchenette stay?
The 1BHK Room has an in-room kitchenette with a stove, sink and counter. If you are using it, buy for two or three days at a time. Rice, dal, eggs, vegetables, milk or curd, bread, tea and coffee cover most simple meals.
Check the room before you shop. Please ask the reception whether utensils, a refrigerator and cooking vessels are provided, and buy only what you need. Do not assume anything is there.
For bigger shopping trips, Express Avenue in Royapettah is a large mall with a 50,000 square foot food court called EA Garden, and Spencer Plaza on Anna Salai has over 700 shops according to Wikipedia. Both are better for clothes, electronics and sit-down meals than for daily groceries, so treat them as an outing, not an errand.
- Buy for two to three days at a time
- Ask what the room provides before buying cookware
- Keep a few shelf-stable items for rainy days
How do you keep cooking safe and clean?
The World Health Organization's Five Keys to Safer Food are a good checklist even for a small room. Keep clean, separate raw and cooked food, cook thoroughly, keep food at safe temperatures, and use safe water and raw materials.
In practice that means washing your hands and surfaces before cooking, using separate plates and knives for raw and cooked items, finishing leftovers the same day, and drinking sealed or treated water.
If you are unsure about a food item or a method, buy something else. Chennai is hot and humid, and food spoils quickly if left out. Never leave a stove unattended, and tell the reception if anything in the kitchenette looks faulty.
What about pharmacy, ATM, laundry and dry cleaning?
Pharmacies near hospitals often run long hours, but hours vary, so ask the reception which one stays open at night. Always keep prescriptions handy. We do not give medical advice here.
For cash, use an ATM attached to a bank branch where possible, and cover your PIN. Keep some small notes for autos and small shops.
For laundry, ask the reception first. A neighbourhood laundry or dry-cleaner usually quotes a rate per piece and a turnaround time. Ask for both before handing over clothes, and keep a note of what you gave.
What should you know about timings and bank holidays?
Banks in India follow state holidays and, as a general rule, close on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, according to the public holiday overview on Wikipedia. Check your bank's own notice if you plan to deposit or exchange anything.
Tamil Nadu state holidays include Pongal in January, Puthandu in April and Deepavali around October or November. Shops and offices may close or open late on those days.
Plan big errands for weekday mornings. Rest in the afternoon, since Chennai's heat can drain energy, and use the evening for a slow walk and a light meal.
How do you handle deliveries and ordering in?
Many guests order food or groceries through delivery apps. Give the reception a heads-up so the delivery person is sent to the right place, and share the exact address: 14, Gulam Abbas Ali Khan 9th Street, off Model School Road, Thousand Lights, Chennai 600006. Add a landmark or the hotel's phone number in the delivery note.
Check food on arrival, avoid leaving cooked items out for long, and keep receipts for anything you plan to return. If you are cooking, a short list on your phone avoids repeat trips.
Keep the hotel's phone number handy when ordering, since a quick call from the rider is the usual way to find a lane.
