Planning an Outpatient Hospital Visit in Chennai: How Many Days?

Short answer

For an outpatient visit in Chennai, book the appointment first, then add at least one spare night in case a second visit is needed. Hotel Royal Inn is an 8 to 9 minute walk from Apollo Hospital on Greams Road, and rates start at Rs 1,800 per night, to be reconfirmed at booking.

Where do you start when planning an outpatient visit?

Start with the appointment, not the hotel. Most large hospitals now take bookings through their website or a helpline, and Apollo Hospitals shows a Book Appointment option on its official site. Once you have a date and a rough time, book the stay around it.

This post is about logistics only. It does not give medical advice. Questions about tests, preparation or treatment belong with the hospital and your own doctor, and you should ask them directly how long your visit is likely to take.

Ask the hospital's appointment desk three practical things: how early to arrive, whether results or reviews may need another day, and what documents to bring. Write the answers down, with the name of the person who gave them and the date of the call. A short note like this saves arguments later.

How many nights should you book?

People often book exactly the number of nights the first appointment suggests, then extend in a hurry. A better plan is to book the expected nights plus one spare, and to ask whether the hotel can extend on short notice.

Why the spare day? Outpatient visits can involve several steps that depend on each other, and one delay can push the next step to the following day. A spare night costs far less than rebooking travel at the last minute.

Hotel Royal Inn charges per room, per night. The Deluxe Double is Rs 1,800 for one guest and Rs 2,000 for two guests, the Triple Occupancy Room is Rs 2,500 for three, and the 1BHK Room is Rs 2,800 for two. Always reconfirm the current rate and any taxes when you book, and ask about extending if your plans change.

  • Book the expected nights plus one spare
  • Ask about extending at the time of booking
  • Keep return tickets flexible if the fare rules allow it

What should you carry on the day?

Keep one folder, in a bag you carry yourself, with the appointment confirmation, photo ID, previous reports, current prescriptions and a list of questions. Take photographs of each page on your phone as a backup.

Carry a water bottle, a light snack, a phone charger and a power bank. Hospitals can be cold inside, so a thin layer is useful even in Chennai's heat. Wear comfortable footwear, because waiting areas, corridors and walking between buildings add up over a day.

Bring some cash in small notes as well. Not every counter or shop near a hospital works smoothly with digital payment, and small change is useful for autos.

How does a nearby hotel change the day?

Staying within walking distance changes the shape of the day. If the appointment runs late or there is a gap between two steps, you can go back to the room, rest and return, instead of waiting in a corridor for hours.

The hotel's own figures put Apollo Hospital at 8 to 9 minutes on foot, Thousand Lights Metro at about 4 minutes and AG-DMS Metro at about 5 minutes. Check-in is at 1 PM and check-out at 11 AM, so for an early morning appointment, think about whether to arrive the evening before and keep a room ready. Our earlier post on arriving before check-in covers that decision.

The hotel has a lift to all floors, which matters if the patient finds stairs tiring, and the reception runs 24 hours, so a late return from the hospital is not a problem.

What if you need to extend or change the plan?

Call the reception as soon as you know. Rooms in the area can fill up, and an early call gives the team a chance to keep the same room for you. For a longer stay, ask whether the 1BHK Room, with its in-room kitchenette, is available, because cooking a simple meal saves both money and effort over many days.

If the plan changes because the hospital asks for another visit, tell the family early and update any train or flight tickets. Indian Railways reservations could be booked up to 60 days in advance from November 2024, so a train ticket for a later date may be possible; check the current rules on the booking site.

Above all, leave room for the unexpected. A plan with one spare day, one folder of papers and a hotel nearby is calm, even when the schedule moves.

What does a sample two-day plan look like?

Day one: arrive, check in after 1 PM, rest, and walk once to the hospital so you know the route. Confirm the next morning's reporting time with the hospital by phone, and keep the receipt or message safe.

Day two: leave early with the folder, finish the appointment steps in order, and use any gap to rest at the hotel instead of waiting in a corridor. Keep the evening free in case the hospital asks you to return the next day. If everything finishes early, you can still use your spare night for a calm departure the following morning.

This is only an illustration. Your own schedule will come from the hospital, and it may be shorter or longer.
