Staying in Chennai for an Exam or Interview: A Planning Guide

Arrive the day before, travel to the venue once in advance, carry your admit card or call letter and ID, and keep a backup day. Hotel Royal Inn is about 4 minutes from Thousand Lights Metro, and Chennai Metro runs from about 5 AM to 11 PM, so an early reporting time is manageable.
Why should you arrive the day before?
Exams and interviews punish tired candidates. A night train or an early flight on the same day leaves little margin for delays. Arriving the day before gives you time to settle, eat properly, sleep and check the route.
Check-in at Hotel Royal Inn is at 1 PM, so an arrival in the afternoon or evening fits the schedule. Reception runs 24 hours, so a late arrival is fine. If you arrive in the morning, our post on arriving before check-in explains your options.
We do not give advice on how to prepare for any specific exam. This is only about logistics.
How do you check the route to the venue?
Read your admit card or call letter carefully for the venue name, address and reporting time, and note any rules about documents. Then, on the day before, travel to the venue once at the hour you will travel on the day, so you know how long it takes in real traffic.
Chennai traffic is slow at peak hours. A route that takes 30 minutes at noon can take much longer at 9 AM. The metro is steadier. Chennai Metro operates trains from about 5 AM to 11 PM, according to the published overview, with trains roughly every 6 minutes at peak on the Blue Line. Check the current timetable on the official site.
The hotel's own figures put Thousand Lights Metro at about 4 minutes on foot and AG-DMS Metro at about 5 minutes.
- Travel the route once before the day
- Save the venue location on your phone
- Plan to reach the area at least an hour early
What should you carry?
Carry your admit card or call letter, original photo ID, photocopies, passport-size photographs if requested, a transparent pouch or folder, and a pen if allowed. Read the instructions for the exam or interview, because rules about phones, watches and bags differ.
Do not carry anything you may not be allowed inside. If bags are restricted, leave extra items at the hotel. Ask the reception beforehand whether they can hold your bags on check-out day.
Keep a spare set of copies in a separate bag, and photographs of the documents on your phone.
How should you handle food, rest and the heat?
Eat a light, familiar meal the night before and a simple breakfast on the day. Avoid trying new or heavy food. Drink water regularly. Chennai is hot and humid for much of the year, with the hottest period from April to June, so carry a bottle and wear light clothing.
If your stay is several days, the 1BHK Room has an in-room kitchenette with a stove, sink and counter where you can prepare simple meals. For a short stay, the hotel offers restaurant service around the clock.
Sleep is more useful than extra revision on the last night. Set two alarms, and ask the reception beforehand whether a wake-up call can be arranged.
Should you keep a backup day?
Yes. A missed train, a medical issue or a rain delay can derail a plan. If your result or next step depends on a second day, a spare night costs far less than rebooking everything. Heavy rain can affect the northeast monsoon months from October to December.
Rates at Hotel Royal Inn are per room, per night: Rs 1,800 for one guest in a Deluxe Double, Rs 2,000 for two guests, Rs 2,500 for the Triple Occupancy Room and Rs 2,800 for the 1BHK Room. Please reconfirm at booking.
After the exam or interview, rest, eat and travel back unhurried. If you can, stay one more night.
What if something goes wrong on the day?
Keep a plan B for each failure. If the metro is delayed, take an auto or cab. If your documents are missing, call the exam or interview contact number on your letter immediately and ask what to do. If you feel unwell, tell the invigilator or organiser at the venue. These are logistics, not medical advice, and you should follow the instructions of the officials on the day.
Heavy rain can slow traffic. A compact umbrella and a plastic sleeve for documents are cheap insurance. Leave extra time, and do not take risks on flooded roads.
Keep your phone charged and carry a power bank. Save the number of your hotel, the venue and one relative or friend. If you are travelling alone, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
Finally, remember that you have prepared as well as you can. Calm travel is part of that preparation. If the day goes slightly off plan, stay polite with staff and organisers, who deal with these situations daily.
