Why does a late departure need a plan?

If you are not sure of your return time, book the extra night. It is cheaper than a stressful day on the street.

If the hotel cannot hold the bags, ask where the nearest cloakroom is, and check the rules and charges there before you hand anything over. Keep valuables, documents and medicines with you at all times.

Where can you spend the hours?

If the bags are safe, you are free to move. Shopping and food are options at malls like Express Avenue in Royapettah and Spencer Plaza on Anna Salai, which Wikipedia describes as large complexes with many shops and a food court at Express Avenue. Mid-day heat is strong, so air-conditioned spaces help.

Chennai Egmore railway station has air-conditioned dormitories, retiring rooms and waiting halls, according to Wikipedia. Rules and availability differ, so check the railway's current booking terms before you rely on them.

If you need to rest, the extra night is usually the best answer.

How do you reach the station or airport on time?

For Central, the Blue Line metro runs from Thousand Lights to Central in three stops, with the hotel about 4 minutes on foot from Thousand Lights Metro. For Egmore, you change to the Green Line at Central. A cab or auto is simpler with heavy bags.

For the airport, which is about 21 km southwest of the city centre, a travel guide estimates 35 to 40 minutes by metro to Central, so ask for the airport trip timing from the hotel. Cabs may take 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Leave early on weekdays and in the rain.

The metro runs from about 5 AM to 11 PM, so for late-night or early-morning departures, a cab is the only option. Confirm the current timetable.

If you travel with an elderly relative or children, allow a larger buffer, since queues at security, ticket gates and lifts take longer. A relaxed arrival at the station is better than a run along the platform.

What should you pack and check before you leave?

Pack the night before. Keep documents, tickets, medicines, chargers and valuables in a separate bag. Check drawers, wardrobe, the kitchenette counter if you cooked, and the bathroom. Take a last look under the bed and around the sockets for chargers.

If you cooked in the 1BHK Room, tidy the kitchenette, dispose of perishables and let the reception know about anything broken. Settle the bill, check the amount against your booking message and keep the receipt.

Take a photo of your luggage tags and ticket details. Keep a charged phone and a power bank for the journey.

What if your train is delayed or cancelled?

Check the live status in the railway's app before you leave. If the train is late, tell the hotel and ask whether the room or desk can help. For a cancellation, rebook, and consider a spare night.

Indian Railways reservations open up to 60 days ahead from November 2024, so you may find another train on a later date, but availability varies.
